Leukotriene Modifiers

Leukotrienes are chemicals in the body that cause airway constriction, excess mucus production, and inflammation and swelling in the lungs. Leukotriene modifiers prevent these things from happening. Depending on the type prescribed, most leukotriene modifiers are taken at least once a day. These medications may not have noticeable effects for one week to one month, so it is essential that you take the medication as prescribed by your physician.

Leukotriene Modifiers for Asthma Treatment

Leukotriene modifiers can be prescribed as a long-term control medication to treat asthma. For those with asthma, this medication prevents the bronchial tubes from constricting. Reducing airway constriction can decrease the chance of wheezing and shortness of breath experienced with asthma. These are taken every day to help reduce inflamation and improve asthma control. As with any medication, continue taking these as prescribed even if you are feeling better.

Leukotriene Modifiers for Allergy Treatment

Leukotriene modifiers can also be prescribed to treat allergic rhinitis.

Montelukast (Singulair®) is the only once-a-day leukotriene modifier and is taken orally. Bronchodilator effects may begin within two hours, but the anti-inflammatory preventive impact will not begin for up to one week. This is often prescribed to treat allergic rhinitis and allergy-induced asthma.
